Hybrid Cars in The Used Car World
Hybrid cars have been out for a number of years now and have been selling in greater and greater numbers. Naturally these vehicles, like all other used vehicles, are trickling down into the used car market. There are a number of issues which the further generations of Hybrid owners & sellers are now facing.
Firstly, the technology used in Hybrid vehicles is actually quite advanced - Strangely enough! Now these vehicles are arriving on used car lots all over the country and no one really knows that much about them as they are quite few and far between. It is these battery things which are causing us the issues and unfortunately they do go 'bad'..... Now I don't know if you have ever had to buy a new laptop battery or cell phone battery, if you have, you might of noticed that they are quite expensive. So if the battery for the electrical item which you can carry around is expensive, the battery for the thing you drive around is going to be very expensive!
So, we have a new generation of cars which mechanics and car buyers are not overly familiar with and that are VERY expensive to fix as and when they go wrong. There are no other suppliers for these batteries other than the manufacturers and they have to be fitted at the original manufacturers dealerships - again this costs a pretty penny! To give you an idea, the cost to replace the battery on one of the more common vehicles is $4,000 + Fitting. It isn't optional that you replace the battery, when it goes bad you have to replace it.
So, As a used car dealer we do not want to purchase these vehicles for our customers. We know that the batteries are going to go bad at some point and we do not want to have to pass these costs onto our customers. We cannot afford to replace the batteries on these vehicles ourselves as we would then loose money on every single vehicle we sold. It is just not worth it to take the chance of either being forced to pay thousands of dollars ourselves, or lumbering a future customers with a product which we are not confident with.
It is not only Crown Auto Sales & Finance that feels like this. We have a full time buyer who attends car auctions throughout three states and spends a great deal of time talking to many key players in the Used Car Dealing World. Almost all of them have the same nervousness about buying a Hybrid vehicle.
The burning questions are going to be how we will look at these in the future when the market is flooded with them? We will report back!
